Nature is finely balanced and we take from it to satisfy ourselves without maintaining the balance. I'm drawn to bumble bees recently as a prime example of a species in steep decline due to our actions. I've depicted them pollinating, carrying out their remarkable fine-tuned role in the circle of life. Their bold colourful bodies amongst flowers display the beautiful potential of nature to thrive. I thought back to beautiful bunnies I once met on the Japanese Island ‘Okunoshima’- 'Rabbit Island'- years ago. The island was used to develop chemical weapons in WWII, the effectiveness of which where tested on rabbits. After the war, rabbits were released to live on the island freely. Nowadays hundreds of bunnies have taken over the island, roaming amongst desolate buildings in a place others were once horribly exploited; it was really surreal. So I painted the wistful look of one bunny I photographed. But the fact is that we are draining the ocean of its life so we may never know the potential the deep ocean had to show us.
